I began my love affair with Turkish towels whilst traveling through Europe in the 1980’s. I have used them as a pool towel, a travel blanket and a scarf when cool, I’ve draped them over a sofa for a minimalist look or used them as a tablecloth for a festive look. - Jane
A Pestemal (pesh- te- mal) is a traditional Turkish Bath Towel made from organic cotton. These traditional towels have been woven for many hundreds of years.
Turkish Bath Towels are crafted on hand looms using organic cotton. They are specifically woven by women in Turkeys’ Eastern Black Sea and Agean regions. The patterns and color determines which area they come from. Whole families are involved in the weaving process often it is the grand mothers who finish the towels by making the tassels.
Today, pestemals are used as bath towels, bathrobes, beachtowels, scarfs, and tablecloths.
