Q&A with Jane: Sun Care

Q - When applying SPF as skin care, does it go on after cleansing or after applying a face oil?

A - Sunscreen is not apart of your normal skincare routine, so I would recommend you always apply sunscreen after your skincare products.

Q - I struggle finding a natural sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white residue on my skin. Do you have any suggestions?

A - Yes! There are a number of great natural brands on the market. At janegee, we love Badger Balm and Raw Elements.  Badger Balm has a collection of sunscreens that use Clear Zinc. Badger Balm’s Clear Zinc sunscreens starts out white but rubs in clear. It is lightweight and easy to apply.  Uncoated Clear Zinc Oxide acts like a non-nano particle in that it stays on the surface of your skin. However, it is actually made up of smaller nano-sized particles that are fused together into larger clumps so that no detectable nanoparticles exist in the product. The clumps are porous, like sea sponges, and their structure allows them to appear clear on the skin, making them a safe, effective, and aesthetically pleasing option. Badger Balm uses this clear zinc oxide in all their clear zinc sunscreens.

Raw Elements is a new brand for us at janegee, but we could not be more in love with their products. They offer a variety of products including, daily sunscreen for face and body, face sticks, collection of tinted face products, lip protection, and a new zero waste baby & kids line! Their products are environmentally friendly, reef safe, and certified natural. Many of their products are also available in plastic free tins or cardboard tubes! I love how nicely everything applies, and how light weight they feel on the skin.

Q - Is it okay to spend some time in the sun without sunscreen?

A - Yes! We should all expose our skin to the sun! The sun is life giving, nourishing, and stimulating. Just be smart and don’t over do it. Limit your time in the sun between the hours of 10am and 2pm (when the sun is most intense), stay hydrated, seek shade whenever available, and wear a hat! A hat will become your best friend!

Q - Do you need a daily facial sunscreen/makeup with SPF?

A -No, I don’t believe you need to apply a sunscreen daily. I believe that we need the sun to maintain good health. If you’re heading to the beach or spending a long time outside, then it is appropriate to use a reliable, natural sunscreen. If you are just heading to work or out for a normal day, I do not think there is a need to apply sunscreen everyday. When in doubt, wear a hat!

Q- Which SPF is best?

A - This is a big question! Sunscreen protection is not linear. For instance:

• SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays

• SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays

• SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays

You can see that a product with an SPF of 50 only provides 1% more protection than one with an SPF of 30. It also means that a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 does not protect your skin for 2xs longer than one with an SPF of 15. Most people recommend using a product with an SPF of 15 or 30 for a couple reasons. First, sunscreens with very high SPFs do not offer much more protection than SPF 30 and give people a false sense of security that they are more protected than they actually are. All sunscreen, whether SPF 15 or 70 needs to be applied and reapplied properly. Regardless how ʻWater Resistantʼ a formula claims to be, it is wise to reapply after any water exposure, sweating, or towel drying.
