3 Skincare Myths Busted
We know that figuring out how to properly take care of your skin can be overwhelming for many. There are a ton of different skincare tips, products, trends, techniques, etc. that are constantly being shared on social media. Because of that, it can be super easy to fall into the trap of buying a new product or trying out a new technique just because it went viral. However, not everything you see about skincare on social media is true… *shocking* That is exactly why we are going to be debunking three common skincare myths.
1. You should exfoliate… false!
This one may surprise you, especially with all of the exfoliating products out there, but trust us when we tell you not to exfoliate! When you exfoliate the skin, you are undermining all of your skincare efforts. Exfoliation is extremely harsh, as it disrupts the membrane between the dermis and the connective tissue allowing bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells to move freely throughout the body.
So what should you do instead? Try using one of our natural clay masks! Clay masks are fantastic for detoxing. The all-natural clay is chock-full of minerals that when put in contact with a hydrosol or water, become electrically charged. This is similar to how earthing (touching your bare feet to the earth, in particular, wet grass) works. When applied to the skin, the clay draws up pollutants, dirt, and debris, revealing its fresh surface and providing a healthy-looking glow. Isn’t that amazing! 2. If it’s labeled “natural” it is a better product… false!
Unfortunately, many marketers today are trying to draw consumers to their products by labeling them as green, natural, eco-friendly, or clean when they are actually full of synthetic ingredients. This is what is known as greenwashing and why you should read the label before you purchase a new product. Did you know that it can only take 26 to 32 seconds for certain ingredients to enter your bloodstream once they are in, on, or around your body? It is so important that we are aware of what ingredients are in the products that we put onto our skin and the effects they can not only have on your health, but also on our environment.
We know it can be overwhelming when you first start to look at ingredients and try to figure out which ones should be avoided. If you need an easy resource to refer to, make sure to check out our Nasties List to learn more about the ingredients that we will never use in our products and ones that you should stay away from as well!
3. Skincare products will solve all of your acne problems… sometimes!
Did you know that there is a strong connection between the appearance of your skin and the health of your gut? Your face is a window into your digestive system. Looking at where your breakouts are located can reveal so much about your skin and body. If you have a problem with your skin, it usually means there is an imbalance somewhere else in your body. This is why products alone may not rid you of your skin problems forever. Most often, you need to readjust your diet and get your gut in good health. Food and beverages containing dairy, sugar, gluten, and/or alcohol are the cause of many skin issues. This is why we emphasize pairing a nutrition plan with your skincare regime in order to get the best, long-lasting results. Interested in learning more? Check out our Nutritional Skincare course!
