Ask the Expert: Answering Your Most Asked Skincare Questions
You asked, Jane answered. We recently sat down with our founder and CEO, Jane Gee, to answer your most frequently asked skincare questions. Read below to discover some of Jane’s best skincare advice.
“Should I be using different products for my morning and nighttime skincare routines?”
Not necessarily. I don't believe in nighttime routines. When you build a routine using the right products, you can use them both day and night.
“Are there certain foods that cause acne?”
Yes. Certain foods (like dairy and sugar) can increase androgens, which means more testosterone, which drives oil production. This is why men have oilier skin. The oil will make the surface cells sticky, and the pores will enlarge.
“Can a face oil replace my moisturizer?”
Only if it's designed to protect the barrier of the skin. Oils such as shea oil will do this, but many don't. Face oils are typically designed to go under your moisturizer. I like our Face Oils because they are designed to target specific issues as well as support and boost the health of the skin.
“Do I need to double cleanse?”
If you have the correct cleanser, you do not need to double cleanse. However, if you wear heavier makeup, double cleansing may be necessary.
“What can I do to help with my hormonal acne?”
If you have breakouts around your periods then this indicates that you are estrogen dominant - this causes the breakouts. I highly recommend increasing cruciferous vegetables (e.g. broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts) leading up to your period or taking DIM (a supplement you can get from your health food store) daily to soak up excess estrogen.
“When should I start using anti-aging products?”
I do not like the anti-aging term. However, the best thing you can do to help your skin age gracefully is to focus on eating well (whole foods that include a lot of green vegetables and antioxidants) and using natural products that support the health of your skin.
“Is it possible to get rid of dark spots completely?”
In some cases, yes. Detoxing your skin can help eradicate pollutants in your skin that cause hyperpigmentation. Products that are rich in Vitamin B3 or Vitamin C will also help.
“How can I shrink my pores?”
You can tighten and refine your pores, but if you were born with oily skin then the pores will naturally be larger to allow the oil to flow. Using a Clay Mask can help tighten, tone, and refine the skin, giving the appearance of smaller pores. Additionally, having a quality skincare routine that supports the health of your skin will make a big difference.
“What is the best way to get rid of blemishes?”
A few pointers…
- Start with regulating oil production by using an oil cleanser. It’s important to make sure you’re using a cleanser that doesn't strip and dry out the surface of the skin.
- Heat the skin with janegee Yang Oil. This oil helps to clean out the pores, enhance skin texture, and reduce congestion.
- Apply a Clay Mask to draw out impurities.
